The Bell Museum serves as Minnesota’s official natural history museum and planetarium, encompassing three levels and covering 90,000 square feet on the University of Minnesota campus.
Designed by Perkins + Will to showcase and enhance the university’s commitment to research, education, and public engagement, this innovative building seamlessly blends modern construction with a deep respect for local heritage and sustainability.
A key design feature is the use of Arbor Wood for both exterior cladding and interior embellishments. The pine used in this project was locally sourced, then thermally modified and installed to meet the museum’s high standards for durability and aesthetic appeal.
This thoughtful material choice underscores the museum’s broader mission of celebrating Minnesota’s natural environment while offering visitors a forward-thinking educational experience.
