Bamboo in a Sustainable Design Environment CEU Presentation

The Bamboo in a Sustainable Design Environment CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is a very useful tool for understanding the basics of engineered bamboo products. It leaves you with a solid big picture understanding of bamboo from an environmental and agricultural perspective, and offers insight into the process from pole, to strip, to product. The CEU offers information for those that may doubt bamboo’s place as a green building resource, while also highlighting Plyboo’s advantages in a millwork package, along with the ways it differs from hardwood plywood and plywood veneer.

The fact that Plyboo is 100% bamboo (bamboo core, bamboo skin, or solid) makes it one of the most versatile millwork grade panels available. In order to enjoy all of the benefits of Plyboo it is important to understand the ways that Plyboo panels differ from standard plywood panels. Plyboo panels offer the benefits of a panel product along with the capabilities of solid wood (perhaps the most important point to get across). Though Plyboo seems expensive in the realm of plywood, when detailed properly it can save a good bit of money on labor.

Plyboo Plywood versus Hardwood Plywood & Veneer From Utilitarian Aspects:

  • Durability: Bamboo has incredibly high impact resistance, with a density comparable to hardwoods. In fact, Bamboo strand is over 2x the density of oak. The fact that a Plyboo panel is 100% bamboo (bamboo core and 1/8” skin) allows you to do things like ease sharp edges and miter corners that with other panels would require solid wood. Eliminating the need for solid wood on mitered corners ends up saving money in the end. The superior impact resistance of Plyboo makes it perfect for both vertical and horizontal surfaces. From a maintenance perspective, Plyboo is nearly universally repairable.
  • Edge Detailing: 90% of Plyboo specification gets written with an exposed edge. The bamboo core/bamboo skin combination makes for an attractive design detail that is both more durable and less expensive to achieve.
  • Joinery: Plyboo accepts all standard glue. PVA wood glue is the most common.
  • Finishing: Plyboo is very easy to finish and takes a stain consistently without getting blotchy. It can be finished using all standard finishing practices from hand rubbed oils, to industrial spray coats with no learning curve for the finisher.
  • Refinishing: Though re-facing cabinets is no longer as popular as it used to be, Plyboo’s ability to be refinished offers longevity for your furnishings. Because of its 1/8” skins a Plyboo panel cabinet face can be run through a wide belt sander, into a spray booth, and look brand new again, even after 20+ years of use.
  • Plyboo Solid Edge Grain: Designed to act as a solid wood, this panel is incredibly useful in a millwork package. You can route into this panel without exposing a core. Common uses are 5 piece doors, mitered frames and baseboard, chair rail, door casing and crown molding. Though Plyboo panels have a high initial expense, they arrive sanded to 180, completely flat and 48” wide with few to no defects or areas that need to be cut away. The fabrication process cuts down on waste, giving you only exactly what you need with a 100% yield.
